The vowel sounds of Y:
1. When Y is at the end of a two-syllable word, it is usually sounds like the long E.
Examples:
party candy sunny
baby fifty angry
Exceptions:
apply July supply reply
2. When Y is at the end of a one-syllable word, it is usually sounds like the long I.
Examples:
cry my fly why
sky by try
3. When Y is in the middle of a word, it is usually sounds like the short I.
Examples:
gym bicycle myth physics
*gypsy
*gypsy: the first y = the short i
the last y = the long e
**Note:
In words like say, play, day, may, gray, and way, the letter “y” is a silent vowel, but it changes the letter “a” into a long vowel sound.
The consonant sound of Y:
When Y is the beginning letter of a word, it is a consonant and we say its consonant sound.
