Vowel Rule # 1:

When a word has only one vowel between two consonants, the vowel usually has a short sound.

Examples:

     trap             hen                 split                        clog                        pup

Exceptions:

     wild             cold                        sign                 both               find

     /ai/              /o/                           /ai/                 /o/                  /ai/

Vowel Rule # 2:

When a word has two vowels together, we usually say the long sound of the first vowel.

Examples:

     pair             dear               lie            soap               fruit

Exceptions:

     bread          heart              great              belief              loud

Vowel Rule # 3:

When a word has only one vowel and the vowel is at the end of the word, we usually say its long sound.

Examples:

     she              be           go           hi             no

Exceptions:

     do                two         to

Vowel Rule # 4:

When “e” is added to a word with a short vowel sound, it changes the sound into its long sound (similar to vowel rule # 2, it is also called tge silent “e” )

Examples:

     cape=cap+e              here=her+e          fine=fin+e

     hope=hop+e            cute=cut+e           plane=plan+e

Exceptions:

     give             come              have               live
